Barry Bernhardt–Associate Director of Bands/Director of Marching Band.

Catherine Rand is the Director of Bands at Florida International University where she conducts the Wind Ensemble, Chamber Winds and teaches courses in graduate and undergraduate conducting, and music education.  She holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in wind conducting from the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music,  Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the University of Tampa and a Master’s degree in wind and orchestral conducting from the University of South Florida. Prior to her collegiate teaching career, Dr. Rand taught band and orchestra for fourteen years in the Florida public school system.  She has presented numerous workshops to music educators and undergraduate students.  Dr. Rand is in demand as a clinician and adjudicator throughout the Southeast.  Her professional affiliations include the College Band Director’s National Association, and the Music Educators National Conference.  She is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda National Honorary Music Fraternity, and is an honorary member of Tau Beta Sigma National Band Fraternity.

Mr. Barry W. Bernhardt, directs the FIU Marching Band, Basketball Bands, Volleyball Band, and Symphony Band. In addition, Professor Bernhardt teaches courses in Music Education and Conducting. Bernhardt is a native Missourian from Macon, where he studied with Larry Bennett. He holds both the Bachelor of Music Education Degree (1981) and the Master of Arts Degree, in Music Education with an emphasis in Instrumental Conducting and Trumpet Performance (1984) from Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri, where he was a student of Dan Peterson and Roger Cody. Bernhardt is in constant demand as a guest conductor, clinician, drill designer/choreographer and adjudicator throughout the United States.  Mr. Bernhardt currently writes competitive marching band shows for several high school bands in Missouri, Illinois and Kentucky and for the Clondalkin Youth Band in Dublin, Ireland.  Mr. Bernhardt has also written for the University of Notre Dame Marching Band and the State University of West Georgia Marching Band.  He has been on the Adjudication Staff of Heritage Music Festivals since 1988. He holds membership in Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia (Upsilon Phi), Kappa Kappa Psi, Pi Kappa Lambda, (current chapter President), the Missouri Music Educators Association, The Missouri Bandmasters Association, College Band Directors National Association and Phi Beta Mu.


Prior to coming to FIU, Mr. Bernhardt was the Director of Bands at Southeast Missouri State University, where he also held was the Chairman of the Department of Music Student Recruitment and Retention Committee.  Mr. Bernhardt was a founding member of the Southeast Faculty Brass Quintet and the Southeast Faculty Jazz Combo. He continues to be active as a trumpet performer, and has performed with the Paducah Symphony Orchestra, the Moody Blues, Colin Raye, the Temptations, among many others. Professor Bernhardt has been on the production staff of Bowl Games of America for the past 20 years and annually writes several halftime performances for major university bowl games, in addition to annually conducting at least two performances for national television.  He will write the Halftime Shows for Champs Sports, Orange, Gator, Sugar, Liberty, Alamo, Holiday and the National Championship Game for the NCAA this season.  In addition, he  conducted the Champs Sports Bowl Halftime show in Orlando, FL on Dec. 27, 2009 for ESPN, and the  Gator Bowl Halftime Show in Jacksonville, FL on Jan. 1, 2010 for CBS.   Bernhardt has also conducted Halftime performances for 4 NCAA National Championship Football Games.
